Caring for Dental Restorations: Tips to Share with Your Patients

At Electric Arts Dental Lab, we’re committed to creating high-quality restorations that meet both aesthetic and functional needs.

After patients receive dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or implants, it’s essential they understand how to care for them. Here are some practical tips you can share with your patients to help them maintain their new smiles for years to come.

1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Advise patients to maintain regular brushing and flossing routines, emphasizing gentle techniques around the restoration. Consider recommending interdental brushes or water flossers for hard-to-reach areas, especially around implants and bridges.

2. Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods

Encourage patients to be mindful of food choices, particularly avoiding overly hard or chewy foods that can place strain on restorations. Suggest alternatives to hard candies, nuts, or sticky items like caramel, which can damage or loosen restorations over time.

3. Wear a Mouthguard If Needed

If your patient has a history of clenching or grinding, recommend a custom nightguard to prevent wear on their restorations. This protective step can preserve the restoration's shape and integrity, especially for crowns and veneers.

4. Regular Dental Checkups and Cleanings

Encourage patients to schedule regular dental exams, where you can assess the health of their restorations and catch any signs of wear early. These visits ensure their restorations stay in top condition and allow for minor adjustments as needed.

5. Be Mindful of Temperature Sensitivity

After receiving a new restoration, some patients may experience mild sensitivity to temperature changes. Recommend that they avoid extremely hot or cold foods initially, and reassure them that sensitivity usually improves over time. They should reach out if it persists for more than a few weeks.

6. Avoid Using Teeth as Tools

Gently remind patients to avoid using their teeth for opening packages or tearing non-food items, as restorations are not as strong as natural teeth when it comes to biting non-food objects. Educating them on this will protect both their natural teeth and any restorations from avoidable wear or damage.
